Midfielder Johnny Cardozo, who plays for Atletico Madrid and the United States men’s national soccer team, will undergo surgery after suffering an injury to his right ankle. The Spanish club confirmed the news on its official website. Cardozo sustained the injury during a training session with Atletico last week. The 24-year-old has been diagnosed with a severe ligament sprain affecting the joint. He is set to undergo surgery in the coming days.
According to Spanish media reports, Cardozo’s recovery could take anywhere from three to six months. As a result, the player is likely to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The U.S. national team is scheduled to face Turkey, Paraguay, and Australia in the group stage.
