Krikunov on IIHF: Instead of Tardif, a Crazy Russophobe May Take Over

Published on: 2026-05-11 | Author: admin

Former Russian national team head coach Vladimir Krikunov has voiced concerns about the future of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) following Luc Tardif’s decision to step down as president. Krikunov stated that he plans to watch some games at the 2026 World Championship, such as Sweden’s matches and perhaps follow Latvia with Harijs Vītoliņš. However, he stressed that without Russia, the tournament feels incomplete.

“What worries me more is who will replace Luc Tardif. He announced his resignation—apparently, he’s had enough of politics. No other IIHF president has left so soon after taking office. He served just one term and then quit. He probably realized they wouldn’t let him work. He came in with a good slogan, trying to promote and develop hockey in countries where the sport isn’t popular. That’s why those nations voted for him—they had no real hockey culture.

I thought he would continue that work, but pressure started coming from all sides. I believe he was ready to bring Russia and Belarus back, but he was squeezed into a corner. Instead of Tardif, a crazy Russophobe might take over the IIHF. It’s unlikely anyone better will come. To be honest, I’m already scared. Some nutcase could come in and drive everyone insane, and they will continue to keep us out,” Krikunov said.
