Samu, the ‘9’ for the Dragons, underwent surgery in Madrid last Wednesday performed by Dr. Manuel Leyes.

Samu, during a match with Porto
Samu Aghehowa, after undergoing surgery for a torn cruciate ligament that will keep him out of the World Cup, is already back in Porto to begin his recovery process under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.
“Yesterday was the most unfortunate day of my career. I suffered a serious injury. I still can’t believe it. I’m devastated, speechless. I’ll be out for a few months. It hurts not being able to help the team as I would like, fighting on the field. Now I’m just another fan supporting us to achieve our goals,” Samu posted on his social media hours after injuring his knee.
He immediately traveled to Madrid, with the club’s approval, to be treated by Dr. Manuel Leyes, one of the world’s leading specialists in knee surgeries for top-level athletes. Dr. Leyes was the same surgeon who operated on Rodri Hernández in October 2024.
The procedure, which took place last Wednesday, went without complications. After staying a few days in the hospital to closely monitor his initial recovery, Samu has now returned to Porto. However, on medical advice, he was recommended to travel by car instead of by plane.
According to information published in ‘A Bola’, several members of the club’s medical staff are accompanying Samu on his return journey, along with his mother. In principle, he will return to the club’s facilities tomorrow to continue the first phase of treatment. The countdown has already begun.
