Compostela players embrace after taking the lead in Viveiro
SD Compostela were left with a bittersweet feeling as they finished as runners-up in Group 1 of the Tercera Federación, despite securing a 0-1 victory on the final matchday away at Viveiro, courtesy of a first-half goal from Damián Noya. The Santiago-based side dreamed of automatic promotion for much of the match, especially as Arosa, their direct rival, were trailing at halftime at home against Céltiga. However, Arosa eventually turned the game around to win 3-2, clinching the league title and direct promotion to Segunda Federación. As a result, Secho Martínez’s team must now focus on the promotion playoffs.
From the opening whistle at Cantarrana, the visitors knew only a win would keep their hopes of direct promotion alive. Sitting second with 65 points, they were under pressure to deliver against a Viveiro side already safe from relegation. The difference in competitive intensity was clear from the start. Compostela took control immediately, dominating possession and camping in the opposing half. They moved the ball with purpose and constantly attacked through the flanks, forcing the home side to retreat deep into their own area. The strategy was simple: score early to avoid nerves creeping in.
That goal came just past the quarter-hour mark from a set piece. From a lateral free kick, home goalkeeper Ayoub hesitated and was caught in no-man’s land, allowing Damián Noya to rise highest and head the ball into the net. It was a deserved opener reflecting Compostela’s dominance.
Far from sitting back, Secho Martínez’s men continued to press forward. In the 24th minute, Armental produced a brilliant individual run down the right, beating several defenders before unleashing a powerful shot that crashed against the side netting. Compostela were in complete control, barely giving Viveiro any attacking opportunities. A double chance came in the 37th minute: first, Parapar’s direct free kick forced a good save from Ayoub, and from the resulting corner, Valín fired a powerful shot just wide from the edge of the box.
Viveiro offered little in attack throughout the first half, merely trying to withstand the relentless pressure. Compostela, fully aware of what was at stake, delivered a serious and disciplined performance, controlling the ball, the tempo, and the chances. They went into the break with a slender but deserved 0-1 lead.
